We do electric motor repair at my business and this came in to get evaluated. It’s over 80 year’s old and this is the first time it’s been out. It runs some doors at a lock and dam.
You can see completely through the motor!

That’s really cool. What repairs did it need?
I bought a compressor with a bad motor (Dayton 2hp). The local electric motor repair place wanted about $50 less than a new one cost to repair it. Probably not that many folks that repair these things any longer.

The funny thing is that 80 years ago (1940) isn’t as long ago as it used to be......

Hose it down with some contact cleaner, regrease and re-install. The brushes are probably made of that sturdy old growth carbon and don’t need to be replaced ;). On a related note I need to fix my the heater fan on my 66 Volvo.

Lol in what way? It's physically bigger than a small block Chevy. I don't know the HP on it.

Some of these old motors are kept in service a long time because of the work it would take to retrofit something newer or can't physically fit anything else.

A motor that s ize runs into the thousands of dollars to replace. We’ve got one at work about the same size and vintage. Years ago we got a replacement quoted and it was something like $5,000-7,000 if I remember correctly.

Looks to be roughly the size and vintage of one we’ve got at my work. Ours is something like a 25hp, but low rpm.

I just realized that there’s a pair of lift forks in the first pic for reference . Holy crap, that thing’s a beast!

Allis Chalmers. That’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. My grandpa used to have an Allis Chalmers ride on lawnmower at his farm.
